Built In Charcoal Grill
Building Your Own Built In Charcoal Grill
While many people today use gas-powered or electric-powered grills to cook their barbecue, steaks, burgers, and other food, a built-in charcoal grill is still preferred by many people because it’s versatile to use, economical to operate, and using charcoal or wood as fuel is cheaper compared to gas and electricity.
Building your own built-in charcoal grill in your own backyard is easy, not very messy and most of all, it is not that expensive as the materials you will use are either cheap to buy or you may already have them in your own house or garage. All you need is some hard work on your part and the materials you need and you can build your own grill within a few hours.
You can make your own design for the charcoal grill as long as it will blend in with the design and appearance of your backyard. The materials and equipment you will include a shovel, a trowel, bricks or concrete blocks, some steel rebar, concrete, metal grill rack, garden hose and water, and a measuring tape or ruler.
The following are the instructions in building your charcoal grill in your backyard.:
1. Make a plain level spot in your back yard for the grill. Make sure the spot is on a plain level by removing any rocks, twigs, and other debris from the spot.
2. Lay down a sturdy concrete foundation on the ground where your charcoal grill will be built on.
3. The ground spot should be approximately four to six inches thick.
4. Use two by fours to build a square frame for the concrete foundation, then mix and fill the frame with concrete. You should follow the manufacturer’s directions on making and mixing the concrete product in order to achieve the best results.
5. You will then lay some rebar in the concrete to give it added durability.
6. After the concrete has hardened, you can either use bricks or concrete blocks to build the base of your built-in charcoal grill. You can build the grill as small or as large as you want. If you prefer a medium-sized grill, it should measure about 30-inches square.
7. Then mix up and use mortar and a trowel to the mud and bring the bricks together. Be sure to stagger the rows so the seams are not one on top of the other.
8. Use the tip of the trowel to smooth out the mortar that’s in the seams of the bricks or concrete blocks.
9. Repeat that entire process until the front and the back walls are built up to one-feet high.
10. Then keep adding mud and bricks and building up the side walls of the charcoal grill until the sides reach 30 inches high.
11. Before you add the next level of bricks or concrete blocks, you will need to place four 3-inch long, galvanized bolts — two on each side, in the mortar in between the bricks or concrete blocks. Those bolts will hold up a grate that the charcoal or wood will lay on.
12. Make sure the bolts are placed evenly apart and that they are placed deep in the mortar. Or you can use additional pieces of rebar to make sure that the bolts are placed evenly apart and that they are placed deep in the mortar.
13. Then continue to lay bricks or concrete blocks to build up the sides of your built in charcoal grill. When the sides reach a height of 38- inches, place four more 3-inch long, galvanized bolts into the sides, or use more rebar.
14. Then continue to mud and lay bricks or concrete blocks until the sides reach a final height of about 36-inches.
15. After all of those works are finished, you have to wait from seven to 10 days for the mortar to be thoroughly dry and set.
16. Then, you’ll need to place a metal grill across the highest set of bolts or rebar, and another grill across the lower set of bolts or rebar. Then lay another grill across the top.
If you will use charcoal briquettes for your built in grill, they should be placed on the lower grill, while your food will be cooked on the upper grill and the top grill. If you want to use wood instead of charcoal briquettes, you can place your wood on either the lower rack of the grill or you can just use the top grill.
